“Peter and the Starcatcher” Alight With Fairy Dust and Farce
By Wes Hessel
Watch Copley Theatre’s sensational production of “Peter and the Starcatcher”, and it’s easy to see why on Broadway the show won five Tonys out of nine nominations. Copley’s version is hilarious, heartwarming, and heartening – this prequel to the legend never grows up or old. For those who may not know, the story involves a Lord Aster and his lovely daughter named Molly, the coming of age (of a sorts) for a Peter, and their battle against a pirate with a black “‘stache” to keep a special treasure out of his hands. Add in the crews of two ships, some other unique individuals, and you have a recipe for adventure, avarice, and anarchy.
When the musical isn’t making points about what is most important and never losing our sense of wonder, it’s scoring sharp hits on all kinds of great lines – the writing is on point, with the company’s delivery and comic timing right on top of it. With sly references to the lore to come and the foundations of its origins, this work builds well to the inevitable climax as good prevails, though the rivalry isn’t over – it’s just begun…
The intimacy and fourth wall breaking which Copley is just perfect for, as well as the excellent technical underpinnings, make this a you-don’t-want-to-miss-it theatrical thrill. But the voyage leaves port for the last time September 1st, so don’t miss the boat – fly to www.paramountaurora.com/series for tickets or more information.
