Congo Square Theatre Company is part of a rolling world premiere of a dark comedy, “Welcome to Matteson!”, which the ensemble is presenting at Abbott Hall on Northwestern University’s Chicago Campus. A longtime resident couple, hosts another pair, recently relocated, for a dinner party – what’s really on the menu?

Playwright Inda Craig-Galvan, originally from Chicago, has penned a very emotional tight woven reality, which Congo Square artistic director Ericka Ratcliff has meticulously orchestrated into a social transcendent tango. As Patricia and Gerald (Sydney Charles and Ronald L. Conner, respectively), prepare a meal for their new neighbors, Regina (Alexis J. Roston) and Corey (Anthony L. Irons).

Agitated energy, nuanced facial expressions, and body language pull the audience into the enticing tension that awaits the couples. The play explores the complex, layered character’s perceptions of each other, their prejudices, and biases. The inviting set design by Joe Schermoly seamlessly allows for the tempo, home flexibility within the space, striking the perfect chord. The welcome mat is out (or is it?) until October 1st; for tickets or more information, please visit their website at www.congosquaretheatre.org.
