Kane Repertory Rocks the River

Kane Repertory Theater’s production of “Twelfth Night”, along the beautiful Fox River in St. Charles, is exceptional.  It has always been one of my favorite Shakespearean masterpieces, and this unique production was very well executed.  After a bevy of Twelfth Nights over the years, I welcome the fresh approach this particular version takes of the work.  Adding pop music, along with clear vocal and guitar numbers, gives a whimsical element to the staging. Use of a mini bubble machine and other summer props brings the party scene character and verve.  Utilizing colorful beach props to comprise the set is a rather ingenious idea, as well, adding a breezy summer feel to this theatrical event.  The use of modern costuming imbues this classic with a nouveau feel that is relaxing and intriguing.

The acting was spot on and the show was well directed, with just the right amount of humor and drama, making for a wonderful romp.  The energetic cast breaks the fourth wall with ease, engaging the audience often, giving one the feel that you are part of the play.  The challenges of the open-air staging were met with aplomb, actors never missing a beat despite the other activities within the park where the production took place.  This performance of Twelfth Night certainly makes me want to see future productions of this innovative theater company.  For information on their upcoming season, please visit their website at www.kanerepertorytheatre.com
