Ballet Is Back

The long awaited return of dance is finally here with a steller, limited-run spectacular that only The Joffrey Ballet can bring, “Home: A Celebration”.  The show opens with a classic dance – “Birthday Variations” is an elegant set of shimmering lights and beautiful chandeliers, coupled with colorful sparkling costumes.  Each pas de deux and solo showcases the artistic excellence synonymous with the Joffrey.  The synchronicity of the choreography is executed with flawless precision; this beautiful work is what ballet magic is all about, bringing back girlhood memories of an evening full of splendor and glamour.

The second selection, “Swing Low”, takes flight with an ethereal and haunting dance.  The feathered costumes are representative of both avian and angelic beings.  This thought provoking all-male work is wonderful in its choreography, pure genius, innovative and Herculean.

Third on the bill is “Under the Trees”, an edgy work dedicated to the memory of the choreographer’s grandfather.  Ballet patrons had the unique pleasure of seeing the work-in-progress of this innovative dance online and could not wait to see the live, finished product. We were certainly not disappointed – “Under the Trees” is on the cutting edge, with the athletic perfection we have come to expect from the Joffrey.

Ending the performance is the classic “Bolero”, understated sophistication at its best.  This sensuous work of art with its amazing footwork, contemporary and simplistic costuming was awe inspiring.  A fierce Ravel musical score makes for a climatic close of a dramatic, prodigious and infallible performance.

The Joffrey’s opening in its new home is simply sensational; the excitement and energy was very well received by the audience – each work was met with thunderous applause and ovation.  This show is not to be missed but it’s only playing through October 24th; for tickets or more information, please visit their website at www.joffrey.org.
