Be a Fly on the Wall at “The Angel Next Door”
By Wes Hessel with Flo Mano
What do you do when you eavesdrop and your world turns upside down? “The Angel Next Door” is a screwball romantic comedy directed by Linda Fortunato. Oliver (Garrett Lutz) wrote a novel about a young actress he met once and fell in love with – now it’s about to be published. A couple who are playwrights, Arthur Sanders (Sean Fortunato) and his wife Charlotte Sanders (Katy Sullivan), are anxiously awaiting to write the script for Broadway, with the actress Margo Bell (Aja Alcazar), the unknowing object of Oliver’s affection in question, to play the lead. Charlotte has arranged for them to stay in an adjoining room to where Margo will be, as they need the gig for their livelihood. All are exhilarated, until they hear through the thin walls Margo and Victor Pratt (Andres Enriquez) in an intimate encounter.
This devastates Oliver, who is intent on tearing up the novel and book contract, to the dismay of Arthur and Charlotte. These scenes had the audience in side splitting laughter; Mr. Lutz’s Oliver is hilarious, and Ms. Sullivan as Charlotte hysterical in trying to keep things together, while Mr. Fortunato delivers Arthur as dazed, confused, and droll. Mr. Enriquez is zany as Victor and Ms. Alcazar makes Margo amusing, having an about face – what a riot. But Olga (Erin Noel Grennan) nearly steals every scene she is in, with her dry, dead pan expression – priceless.
Then this farce of a play takes a twist by the witty Charlotte, who connives a way out of this situation – to find out how it comes out, you have to go see this rollicking comedy at Northlight. But the antics only carry on until May 10th, so head to www.northlight.org for tickets or more information.
