Sharp Remy Bumpo’s “Hedda Gabler” Cuts Like A Knife
By Wes Hessel with Flo Mano
What’s in a name? Remy Bumpo’s “Hedda Gabler”, directed by Marti Lyons, opens the door for us to observe and reflect. Yet it is fast paced – honed, precise, short, emphatic, no nonsense, to the point dialogue that cuts like a knife; I was hooked…
Aurora Real de Asua, as Hedda, is spot-on, embodying a charismatic, dismissive, insolent, domineering, calculating, devious, scheming manipulator, and Greg Matthew Anderson’s Judge Brack is her equal exploitative, magnificent master puppeteer. Flipe Carrasco is excellent in his delirious euphoric intensity playing Hedda’s captivating infatuation Ejlert Lovborg. And Eduardo Curley portrays to perfection her enamoured, naive husband Jorgen Tesman.
Gloria Imseih Petrelli makes the innocent, strong, independent Mrs. Thea Elvsted incredible, reaching the epitome of virtue. Annabel Armour discreetly shines in her characterization of the astute Aunt Tesman; Linda Gillum gives us a Berte who says more than she speaks by her expressions.
The set is decorated in a visual palette of violet/purple hues; an elaborate stage design, with details down to the spines of the volumes in the bookcase. This precarious Ibsen play is timeless and complex, like opening Pandora’s box – a must see. Before the title character brings down all that is around her March 8th, make your journey to www.remybumppo.org for tickets or more information.
